IICRC Lands Good Housekeeping Plug
May 2002 -- Vancouver, WA

Readers of Good Housekeeping must need their carpets cleaned these days.

The magazine's May issue offers a feature on the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). Since the article appeared, the IICRC has received twice as many referral calls as normal on its toll-free referral line from all over the United States, according to Ruth Travis, IICRC marketing committee chairwoman and Cleanfax magazine columnist.

The article "What to Know Before Calling a Pro," on page 150 in the magazine's "Savvy Consumer" section, provides Good Housekeeping's 4.6 million readers tips for selecting a carpet cleaner and information on the IICRC referral line and website.

IICRC asks callers where they heard or read about the toll-free referral line, and many indicated they learned about it from the Good Housekeeping article, which is good news to Travis. "We have been working very hard to support our registrants though a strong consumer public relations campaign," Travis said. "Our referral line and website have been very busy since the magazine hit the stands last week, and we expect it to continue."

Good HousekeepingThe Good Housekeeping article, which doesn't appear on the magazine's website, came about after Jeff Bishop, IICRC certification board chairman, did a phone interview with the magazine a few months ago. Travis followed up via e-mail with some information about IICRC, and Bishop received a second call a week or so later to answer a few additional questions.

That was the last IICRC heard from Good Housekeeping, but when Travis recently learned that IICRC's referral line had been receiving many inquiries from Good Housekeeping readers, she realized that the article must have been printed. While traveling, she picked up a copy of the May issue at Cincinnati Airport and found the article.

This isn't the first time IICRC has been in the national media spotlight. About two years ago, Lea Thompson from NBC's "Dateline" interviewed Bishop about "Bait and Switch Cleaners," Travis said.

Founded in 1972, IICRC is the certification registry that develops and monitors educational programs and standards for the inspection, cleaning and restoration industry. It is the largest non-profit registry of inspectors, cleaners and restorers serving the U.S., Canada, Great Britain and Australia. The organization approves schools and instructors that meet the criteria established by the IICRC and also serves as a consumer referral source for certified firms, technicians and inspectors.
