Patrick Moffett

Q. When were you first elected to the Board of Directors?
    A. I was elected during fall 2009.
Q. What position(s) do you hold on the Board?
    A. I’m a Director.
Q. What is your shareholder affiliation?
    A. My shareholder affiliation is Director At Large.
Q. What committees with The Clean Trust do you chair or participate?
    A. I’m active on the WRT (Water Damage Restoration Technician) and AMRT (Applied Microbial Remediation Technician) Committees.
Q. What are your Clean Trust Certifications?
    A. My IICRC certifications include: Restoration Master Restorer, WRT (Water Damage Restoration Technician), AMRT (Applied Microbial Remediation Technician), OCT (Odor Control Technician), ASD (Applied Structural Drying), HST (Health & Safety Technician) and CCT (Carpet Cleaning Technician), amongst others.
Q. What is your "day job" and how long have you been doing it?
    A. For the past 35 years I've held several jobs, such as a paramedic, hospital infection control practitioner, hazardous materials expert, environmental/industrial hygienist, general contractor and restoration professional.
More recently (within the past 20 years), I've become an expert in litigation, working with cases involving: construction defects, cause and origin, environmental assessment/testing, and standards of care. Besides expert witness work I've been assigned as an appraiser and mediator in several cases.
I teach environmental mitigation classes across the US, Canada and UK through various Associations, and teach as a faculty member of California State University. I've presented papers and/or lectured at the British Police Academy, Oxford and Leicester University in the UK, the University of Victoria in British Columbia, as well as several US colleges.
I've also self-published five books and enjoy technical writing, with four “white papers” to my credit.
My day-to-day activities are constantly changing, since no two days are exactly the same. For example, this week of March 8th, 2010: I'm helping an out-of-state attorney with his case representing an IICRC contractor; I have a 21 story building that experienced water damage on several floors where I've written the restoration contractor’s scope of work and am completing the final round of clearance testing for potential signs of mold contamination; I just completed an update to the OCT course through Mike West in hopes to eventually instruct the OCT; I have five reports to complete that involve the recent southern California wildfires, mudslides and rainstorms; and tomorrow, I'm on a conference call to discuss a new legal case where people became sick and had to be vacated (I’ll be giving my thoughts about the types of testing needed to document current conditions in their workplace); and finally, in my spare time, I'm in the process of writing new sections of an SOP manual for our industry.
Q. What other industry organizations are you active, what do you do for them and how could this benefit The Clean Trust?
    A. I write to and consult with RIA (Restoration Industry Association), CFI (Carpet & Fabricare Institute) and ABRA (American Bio-Recovery Association). I'm an active member with AIHA (American Industrial Hygiene Association), ASTM and about six other associations not aligned with ours.
Q. What are your hobbies/interests outside the industry that you would like to share?
    A. I play tournament poker as a stress reliever, and enjoy going to the gym with my wife.
Q. Please tell us about any awards or professional recognition received during your experience in the cleaning, restoration and inspection industry.
    A. My early industry awards came from clients through letters of thanks, due to my being able to resolve their problems when no one else could.
In 1984, and again in 1995, I received a technical writing award from the CFI.
Over the years I've received accommodations for participating on various committees and task forces, such as ASCR, RIA, IICRC, ABRA and ASTM.
In November 2009, I received an award from ABRA for the time and effort I've dedicated to the American Bio-Recovery Association.
I'm proud to have received twice (August 2000 and again 2009) the Bill Bailey and the Joe Laurino Memorial awards for my years of sharing and industry leadership.
In February 2010, I received a 10 year award for the dedication of time I put into the California Society of Safety & Security Professionals.
Last week I was honored at the RIA conference with the 2009/2010 Golden Quill Award.
Q. What areas of expertise do you have that would be beneficial to The Clean Trust?
    A. My area of expertise is mainly technical. As an active participant with WRT and AMRT, I hope to pick up new challenges possibly in blood borne pathogens, sewage cleanup, smoke odor control, health and safety, and setting up internet training.
