Edward (Ed) Ray Hobbs MSPCA IICRC Treasurer

Q. When were you first elected to the Board of Directors?
    A. I was first elected in the fall of 1998 (first meeting was in the spring of 1999 in Madison, WI).
Q. What position(s) do you hold on the Board?
    A. I have held the position of IICRC Treasurer since October, 2004.
Q. What is your shareholder affiliation?
    A. My shareholder affiliation is Association (MSPCA – Mid-South Professional Cleaners Association).
Q. What committees with IICRC do you chair or participate?
    A. I currently chair the Finance Committee and will be chairing the new Investment Advisory Committee. I am also a member of the Executive, Registrant Standards, Certified Firm, Distance Learning, Supporters, and S100 Committees, as well as multiple TACs (Technical Advisory Committees).
In the past, I have chaired the Certified Firm and Registrant Standards Committees, as well as participated in the Paid President Task Force (amongst others).
Q. What are your IICRC Certifications?
    A. The IICRC certifications I hold are: Master Textile Cleaner, Master Fire & Smoke Restorer, Journeyman Water Restorer, Journeyman Fire & Smoke Restorer, Journeyman Textile Cleaner, CCT (Carpet Cleaning Technician), CMT (Commercial Carpet Maintenance Technician), UFT (Upholstery & Fabric Cleaning Technician), WDT (Water Damage Technician), WRT (Water Damage Restoration Technician), OCT (Odor Control Technician), CRT (Color Repair Technician), RRT (Carpet Repair and Reinstallation Technician), SRT (Fire & Smoke Restoration Technician), HST (Health & Safety Technician), LCT (Leather Cleaning Technician), RCT (Rug Cleaning Technician), and SMT (Stone, Masonry, & Tile Care Technician).
Q. What is your "day job" and how long have you been doing it?
    A. I have been the owner/operator of Hobbs Ultra-Clean Service, a DBA of HUCS, Inc., since 1983. The business has been in existence since 1967 (it was initially a Duraclean franchise).
Q. What other industry organizations are you active, what do you do for them and how could this benefit the IICRC?
    A. Since taking over the chairmanship of the Certified Firm and Registrant Standards Committees in the spring of 2001, I have dedicated my efforts to the IICRC. Prior to that, I served on the MSPCA board of directors for over 10 years and still report to them regarding IICRC issues. A Chamber of Commerce has just been chartered in Gates County and we have joined as charter members and agreed to be the assistant Website Administrator.
Q. What are your hobbies/interests outside the industry that you would like to share?
    A. I have been married to my beautiful wife Renee since 1993 and we have two gorgeous daughters, Sarah, 14 and Rebecca, 12. Being a husband and a father has been the most rewarding, yet challenging thing I have ever done. I am an active member of my local church where I have been a member since 1981 and have served as Treasurer since 2003. I also enjoy building my own computers from scratch; in fact, my business has been computerized since 1984. I also provide some tech support for friends and neighbors.
I also enjoy freshwater fishing, although I have not done much over the past few years due to lack of free time.
Q. Please tell us about any awards or professional recognition received during your experience in the cleaning, restoration and inspection industry.
    A. I have received the Dick Bernson Award from the MSPCA for advancing the science and professionalism of our industry in general, and the MSPCA in particular. I have also received the Steamway President’s Award.
Q. What do you personally wish to contribute to the IICRC during your term?
    A. I hope to be part of the team that continues to raise the level of professionalism in our industry, while doing so with the utmost integrity.
Q. What areas of expertise do you have that would be beneficial to the IlCRC?
    A. I have a fairly good understanding of tax code as it relates to nonprofits, although I certainly am not a CPA or an attorney. Even though I run a small business, I have the ability to work well with large numbers. I am also a pretty good proof reader and editor. As might be expected, I am technically proficient as a carpet cleaner, but this is certainly not unique to our industry. In general, I am detail oriented, but also have the ability to focus on the big picture when needed. All that said, my best assets to the institute are probably my familiarity with the organization and its policies/finances, and my ability to get along well with others and work together with those of opposing viewpoints to accomplish a common goal.
