IICRC Standards Activity: 2013 Year in Review

IICRC Standards Activity Report

2013 has been an extremely busy and productive year for IICRC Standards – we have been re-accredited by ANSI to continue to develop ANSI Standards, we have completed S800 and have it ready for publication; S500, S520, and S600 have been through their first rounds of public review, and S500 is now in the second round of public review; S210 and S540 are under development as new Standards; and S100 is getting ready for the first round of public review. Through the year we have continuously strived to work with our friends and critics in an inclusive and fair manner, in an effort to create the best standard of care documents for the entire industry. The outlook for 2014 looks bright and promising.

The following is a detailed update of standards activities during the month of December 2013:

  • S100 Standard and Reference Guide for Carpet Cleaning: Chair - Doug Bradford and Vice Chair - Bo Bodo.

Jeff Cross has been working on editing the revised draft Standard through November and December. All Chapters will be edited, the Standard Sections will be pulled out, and editing completed by January 15, 2014. In the second half of January the consolidated Standard and Reference Guide documents will be posted online for the CB to review. In February the Standard and Reference Guide will be put out for 45-day public review (for Standard) and peer review (for Reference Guide), as well as for CB final approval ballot.

  • S210 Standard and Reference Guide for Dimension Stone Maintenance, and Restoration: Chair - Gregg Laviolette, Vice Chair – Martin Brookes.

The S210 CB is scheduled to have their first in person on Tuesday, January 28th at 6 pm at the IICRC Las Vegas building. The CB had its last GTM on November 21.

  • S300 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Upholstery Cleaning: Chair – Ed Hobbs, and Vice Chair – Paul Pearce.

No update on this Standard. We are still accepting applications and need wider representation. All applications received so far have been reviewed by CB Chair and Vice Chair.

  • S500 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration: Chair – Mickey Lee, and Vice Chair – Chris Taylor.

The S500 Standard and Reference Guide is currently available for a second round of public review and CB approval ballot from December 06 2013 to January 20, 2014. The primary changes made to the Standard since the first round of public review include:

  • Revisions and clarifications in Section 13.5.7 and Chapter 13 Structural
  • Restoration chapter dealing with airmover calculations and placement.
  • Removal of the Materials and Assemblies table from the Standard and placing as Chapter 17 in the Reference Guide, in effect removing it from being a component of the standard of care.
  • Citing of many technical references that were inadvertently left out of the first draft.
  • Numerous clarifications and changes as a result of the input from the peer review process.
  • S520 Standard and Reference Guide on Professional Mold Remediation: Chair – Jim Pearson, and Vice Chair – Scott Armour.

The public review period on the Standard and the peer review period on the Reference Guide closed on August 19th. The CB is having weekly GTMs to address public review and CB comments. The process of reviewing all comments is expected to take 2 to 3 months. So far the CB had addressed approximately one-fourth of the total comments. Meeting minutes from the last GTM on December 16 are provided here as Attachment 1.

The S520 Standard and Reference Guide will both be put out for a second round of public review, peer review, and CB approval ballot after all the comments in this public review and peer review round have been addressed.

  • S540 Standard and Reference Guide for Trauma and Crime Scene Biological and Infectious Hazard Clean Up: Chair – Kent Berg, and Vice Chair – Don McNulty.

The Consensus Body has bi-monthly GTMs in order to speed up the development process. All chapter chairs have been asked to work on preparing drafts for their chapters. The CB has cancelled all December GTMs, and the next one is scheduled for January 14, 2014.

  • S600 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Carpet Installation: Acting Chair – Tom Jennings, and Vice Chair – Jeff Bishop.

CRI and WFCA representatives are still working on revising Chapter 1 on Areas of Responsibility to present to the S600 Consensus Body for their review and approval. There has been delay in approving Chapter 1 as there is lack of consensus on what should be included in this Chapter.

The S600 Standard and Reference Guide will be put out for a second round of public review and CB approval ballot after all the comments in this public review round have been addressed.

  • S800 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Carpet Inspection: Chair – Bill Doan, and Vice Chair – Lew Migliore.

IDS America has completed the typesetting and final formatting of the Standard, set the Index. The typeset and formatted draft document was made available to the CB membership for final review. We are on track to have S800 published in January 2014. S800 will be the first IICRC Standard to be made available in e-pub format for e-readers and other mobile devices. We are also currently working on a marketing and promotion plan for S800.

  • Monitoring Standards: Ongoing weekly review of ANSI Standards Action publication which includes project initiation notifications, meeting notices, new and revised standards notices, and public review notices.
  • Society for Standards Professionals (SES): I have been active on the SES Board as the Secretary for a few months now. We have monthly Board calls, lots of action items, and four in-person meetings every year. The next in-person meeting is scheduled for February 13-14, 2014 in Raleigh, NC.
  • December Meetings:

    • S520 CB GTM – December 02, 16, and 30.
    • SES Board Web Meeting – December 17.
    • SES Executive Committee Web Meeting – November 25.
