IICRC Spotlight

IICRC June 2014 Spotlight - Tom Vegter and Mary Space - Water & Mold Away USA, Inc.Co-owners Tom Vegter, President; Mary Space, CEO
Water & Mold Away USA, Inc.

How did you land in this industry?
Tom started in the restoration industry after owning a carpet care business. After 15 years, we decided to start our own company in 2010 in the Southern California area. He has also led teams into Hurricanes Katrina and Rita to help with restoration efforts.

How are you involved with the IICRC? We are a part of the IICRC through our certifications as well as following IICRC standards. We have completed all of our training and sent all of our employees to train for different certification levels. In addition to our individual certifications, we are proud of our Certified Firm status!

What do you do to market your business? Our number one priority is our current customers and keeping them satisfied. We also like to spend our dollars locally and support local nonprofits – our customers like to see this and appreciate it. And, of course, we also use all the usual marketing channels, including the online, local publications, printed materials and a grateful handshake.

IICRC Spotlight June 2014 - Water & Mold Away USA, Inc.What’s one unique thing about cleaning and restoration in your area? Are there any specific challenges you face due to your location?
We have a lot of competitors in this area and have found that the number one way to stay in business and to succeed is through customer care, integrity and good employee work ethic. We look at each customer on an individual basis and treat their home like it is our own.

What do you like best about your job? It takes a special type of person to really enjoy this business; it’s like being an ER doctor! We mostly enjoy assisting people in their time of need and being compassionate when they need help.  It makes us happy to see the smiles and appreciation for a job well done.

What is the most rewarding thing about owning a cleaning and restoration business? We believe that owning our own business gives us the ability to add positively to this economy and to our employees’ lives. We also know that helping others with their home or business is the key to a long, successful business.
