IICRC Spotlight

Elan Kissar
President
Water Damage Zone & Restoration, Inc. IICRC Spotlight Elan Kissar with Water Damage Zone & Restoration, Inc.
Van Nuys, Calif.

How did you land in this industry?
I was involved in the reconstruction side of this industry for many years. My wife is actually the one who convinced me to get into the remediation and restoration business as well.

What do you do to market your business?
Water Damage Zone recognized that people ultimately would use the Internet to find local resources and vendors, so we invested heavily in our Web presence early-on through marketing pushes in social media and search engine optimization. As a result, we're generally in the top three when our clients do a search on most any related topic.

If you could give one piece of advice to a young professional starting out in the business, what would it be?

IICRC Spotlight Elan Kissar with Water Damage Zone & Restoration, Inc. Feb 2014I would say to go by the rules, especially the IICRC rules. Watch, listen and pay attention when you're working so you don't get hurt. You learn something from every single job you do.... Take it all in.

Can you talk about a restoration “horror” story or anything funny you have encountered during your career?
I don't think anything can really prepare you for the “horror” of having to enter a crawlspace in a suit after a sewage leak has done its worst ... for days. Nor can anything adequately prepare you for opening a ceiling during a mold remediation job and having your tech get hit in the head by a very old... um, “adult toy.” You take each job as they come, do your best and strive to make the client happy.

How are you involved with the IICRC?
We have been a Certified Firm for a few years and have made it a point to follow the standards and practices on our job sites. More than once, we've directed clients to research the organization.
