How long have you been in the industry? Involved with IICRC?
I have been involved in the industry and with the IICRC for 14 years.

What do you do to market your business?
To market my business, I make sure we are listed in our local Yellow Pages, both online and in print. We also have a social media presence and attend networking functions through Business Networking International (BNI) and our local Chamber of Commerce.

Has your business been affected by any natural disasters? If so, how, when?
Rain storms dramatically influence our restoration workload. In 2005, our area experienced a torrential storm that raged throughout the night. In the morning, the roads around my home were closed due to flooding, but I had to get to work because I knew it would be a busy day. So, I put on my jogging shoes and waded through the water near my home and jogged to a friend’s home in another suburb who lent me a car.

I then encountered further flooding near my factory, so I parked the car on the side of the road and again waded through the water and jogged the rest of the way to my factory. The phone ended up ringing non-stop throughout the day and we attended 240 water damage jobs over the ensuing days.

IICRC International Spotlight - Gary Bourke, Owner/Manager PHJ Services, Gold Coast of Queensland, AustraliaWhat tips would you recommend to other Certified Firms that experience a surge in business after a natural disaster?
I would recommend that they get to know the best of their competitors and form relationships.

What is your favorite food?
Red wine

If you could invent the perfect cleaning product or machine, what would it do?
I would invent a way to eliminate browning stains from wool carpet.
