Finding Companies Who Offer Rug Repairs

Many times rug repairs can be done by the homeowner, but there are occasions where professionals need to be called. Whether it is just to clean the item or it needs some serious maintenance done, it is best to call a company that has years of experience in this type of restoration. Since there are a wide variety of rugs, there is a lot to consider when it comes to even basic maintenance of each piece. Much depends on what kind of material is used, how the fibers are woven together, and how old the piece is. Someone’s great-grandmother’s runner that was handmade during the Civil War cannot be replaced, so extreme care must be taken, even in cleaning the item.

Professionals that specialize in rug repairs that have been in business for some time understand the value of such a piece that is mentioned above. They will know the different methods that can effectively and safely clean or repair the item. A company that specializes in cleaning and restoration would be necessary in cases like that. Oriental, Persian, Native American, and antique area rugs would also need to be treated in much the same manner. The materials that are used and how they are woven together need to be understood so that the right cleaning or restoration process can take place. This can contrast to how a newer, modern piece would be treated. Also, synthetic fibers would be cleaned or mended differently than wool or other plant derived fibers.

There are many things that a homeowner can do to help aid in the longevity of their flooring option.  Properly and regularly cleaning it, treating stains or spills as promptly as possible, and using the right form of treatment for a spill or stain can help prolong the life of the piece. However, when there are accidents that exceed the knowledge on the homeowner, a professional needs to be called. Some companies will come to the home and complete the rug repairs. Others will come and take the piece to their warehouse or store and do any cleaning and maintenance there. The company should also offer a free onsite estimate where they will explain the process of exactly what needs to be done.

The types of techniques that are used to do rug repairs differ as much as the item itself. If fringe needs to be replaced, the type of rug will determine how that is done. Serging is often done to give the appearance of a hand woven border. It is a yarn material that is either sewn or threaded around the edge. If binding needs to be replaced, then a narrow piece of material will be placed over the edge and sewn to eliminate the possibility of further fraying. If there are holes or tears in the piece, then one of two techniques can be used; either patching or re-weaving. Patching would consist of using a piece of remnant the size of the space and sewing it or gluing it.  Re-weaving is done by first completely removing the damaged part. Then a new backing is installed, and the section that was removed is rewoven with new materials.

When the time comes to have rug repairs done, it is best to have a company that has had years of experience tackle the job. This way, it is ensured that it is done right and without causing further harm to the piece.
