IICRC Certified Firm Spotlight

Ronald Legacy, Owner
Legacy Services Carpet Cleaning, Auburn, Wash.

How did you land in this industry?
I started doing janitorial work for a family friend as a teen. I loved the instant satisfaction of taking something that’s dirty and making it clean. I was really good at it and decided to start my own business in July of 1991.

How are you involved with the IICRC?
One thing I’ve witnessed in life is the better prepared you are, the more opportunity seems to follow you, and the IICRC has equipped me for success in the carpet cleaning industry. To date, I have been certified in the following classes:

  • Carpet cleaning
  • Odor control
  • Health and safety equivalent
  • Color repair
  • Applied structural drying
  • Carpet repair and reinstallation
  • Fire and smoke restoration
  • Water damage restoration
  • Journeyman water restorer
  • Journeyman fire and smoke restorer
  • Journeyman textile cleaner
  • Upholstery and fabric cleaning
  • Commercial carpet maintenance
  • Floor care
  • Master fire and smoke restorer
  • Master textile cleaner
What do you do to market your business?
We largely use social media. We let our customers tell their story, which has worked well for us. Currently, around 14,000 people like and follow our Facebook page and we have nearly 800 reviews. With that kind of reach, our customers do all of our advertising for us. Also, we service Seattle and its surrounding communities – it’s a fantastic market.

Is there a cleaning job that you are particularly proud of?
I have a fantastic team and I’m really proud of them – does that count?! We have so many great clients in the area it’s really hard to choose a favorite, but cleaning the KeyArena in downtown Seattle was a ton of fun.

If you could give one piece of advice to a young professional starting out in the business, what would it be?
Create systems for your company and replace yourself! Also, when I make decisions for my company I reverse engineer them based on the outcome I desire. Learning this skill can help you create a solid foundation.

What do you like best about your job?
I love watching my children as they step into roles within the company and watch them flourish; they are my “Legacy.”

What is the most rewarding thing about owning a carpet cleaning business?
We are not just cleaning carpets; we’ve become involved with our community. We are making a difference and that is the most rewarding thing about what we do. The positive letters, phone calls and social media posts are so humbling.
